Once you register as a seller or broker/agent account the steps are pretty self explanatory. You’ll follow your account options to add a listing and be prompted on what you need to do from there.

How much does it cost to list a business for sale?

Pricing is dependent on the type and number of listings you maintain and the subscription chosen. Please visit the Sell a Business page to get up to date pricing information.

How do I pay for my listing and how much does it cost?

You pay for your listing online using a credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover via Stripe which is a highly secure processing platform. Pricing and terms listing plans vary based on the lengthy and type of subscription you choose. A successful deal typically takes 6 to 12 months. All subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel.

How do I protect my business if the sale is confidential?

When filling out the listing form, you can reveal as much or as little information about your business as you wish. Keep in mind once the listing is released to the world online it is irreversible so only include information you are okay being public domain. For confidential sales be sure to only include the city or county on the listing form and description of the business that does not give the name and location away. Consider also the name used on your contact details as you may want to use an alias or contact that would not easily give away the business. You may also require prospective buyers to complete an NDA or Confidential Agreement once you have pre-qualified them.

How long does my listing last on the website?

When you list your business for sale you are signing up for a  subscription which automatically renews based on the interval selected.

How long does it take for my listing to appear online it?

Listings are instantly posted when submitted.

Can I include photos and images on with my listing?

Yes! Each listing requires at least 1 photo or image. If the sale is confidential please use a stock image or photo that won’t give away the business name and location. A picture is worth a thousand words so keep that in mind as they draw in buyers. Brokers often use a logo for placeholder images which is fine but we recommend something related to your industry to really draw a buyer in.

How do I make a changes to my listings and account?

Login to your account. Click on “Listings” on the left navigation. Next click “View Listings” also on the left navigation. Then you can select “Edit” to make text changes, or “Photos” to add/remove or reorder photos on your listing.

How do I retrieve my password to access my account?

In order to retrieve your password, visit the “Login” link and click on the “Lost Your Password” Link in the login area.  Type in your email address that you used for your account and click the “Get new password” button. Check your email box to recover your account password.

How do I update my contact information?

  1. Login to your account using the email address and password created at registration.
  2. Click on “My Profile
  3. Update information and be sure to click “Update Profile

How do I increase the response to my listing?

One way to increase response is to try and upgrade your listing to a Featured listing if you currently are utilizing the standard option. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. Login to your account using the email address and password you created during your registration.
  2. Click on My Listings
  3. Click Set as Featured button and follow the prompts.
  4. If you have not already purchased a Featured Upgrade, please visit the Membership page and change your Membership Plan to on that includes featured credits.

How do I remove a listing?

To remove your listing, login to your account and click on “Listings” > “View Listings” and click on “Edit.” On the publish bubble click on the “No” bubble and scroll down to save. This keeps the listing in the account but removes it from being active. You can also contacts us to put in a removal request a removal.   Note that removing a listing does not cancel an account. To cancel your account proceed to “Account” > “Manage Account” > “Close My Account” to cancel billing.

How do I cancel my account?

Please do not try to cancel your account until you are ready for all your information to be removed from our system. We do not pro-rate and we can not recover account and listing information once the cancellation is requested. You can cancel by logging in navigating to close or cancel your account.

How do I value the business and put an asking price to it?

Each and every business is different and has different multiples assigned based on history, assets included, and potential to grow. Generally the range for profitable businesses is in the 2 to 10 times annual cash flow.  The multiple can be lower or higher depending a vast array of factors. We recommend doing some research on your specific industry to come up with a price you would be willing to sell the business. Often times owners overprice the business and it scares away buyers from showing any interest. Just because you receive an offer, does not mean you need to accept the terms and you can always counter with a higher price. With that said, think carefully before you list as you generally want to assign a price you would be willing to accept. You can generally consult with a business broker in your area or that specializes in your type of business transactions to get a free or low cost valuation.

Can I list a startup or business that is not making money?

Yes, absolutely. Although often times startups are not profitable, they may have accumulated assets such intellectual property rights that hold value. This is the same with any business that may be losing money. There is generally always something to be sold unless the debt truly outweighs the asset value.

How do I register for a free buyer account?

All buyer memberships are currently free. To register click on the “Buy a Business” link and follow the prompts to register. To register you need to include your full name, email address, phone number, primary region of interest, and you will create a password to access your account.

How do I subscribe to free automatic email updates?

When searching the website, you can save searches of your choice. Each one of these searches will produce a weekly email to update you on any new listings meeting the criteria.

Do I need to register to contact sellers?

No! Anyone visiting the website that is interested in a business for sale can contact sellers or brokers by filling our the online inquiry form as long as your are not making a solicitation unrelated to the purpose of buying the business. By registering you make it easier to submit inquiries by only having to update the message each time. You also benefit from tracking your favorite listings and creating saved searches which will update you regularly.

What are the advantages of registering?

Registering is completely free and gives you some helpful tools to help you in the buying process including listing match notifications, free business wanted listings, the ability to track listings of interest, and more!

How do I do I find a business for sale?

You can start from the homepage and use the search tools available to narrow your search type. You can also log into your account before doing searches so you can track your favorite listings.

How do I update my buyer account information?

Login to your account. Once you are logged in click on “Contact Details,” type your new contact information into the fields you want to update, and the “Save and Continue” button.

How do I search the website?

Our website has a number of different search functions. The best place to start is on the homepage. If you are looking for a general search you should type in the city or state you are looking and click search for maximum results. You can then filter results using additional search options.

How do I get more information regarding a listing?

To get more information regarding a listing you should start by making an online inquiry which is emailed directly to the listing contact. On each listing there is a form that is pre-populated with a standard message. Just add your name, email address, phone number and click the checkbox to confirm you are not a robot and click submit. We do not provide additional information on the listings as we know as much as you do so you must contact the seller or broker using the form or phone number to get additional details.

How do I contact a seller/broker listing?

To get more information regarding a listing you should start by making an online inquiry which is emailed directly to the listing contact. On each listing there is a form that says “Request More Information” which you should complete with your full name, proper email address, and phone number.

Why hasn't the seller or broker responded to my inquiry and what can I do to get more information?

There are a number of reasons the seller may not have responded. Make sure you included your correct email address and phone #. If you are one character off that email or phone call will not get back to you. If you haven’t heard back within a reasonable period of time, make a follow-up phone call to make sure they got your inquiry. With the amount of emails, texts, and voicemails people are dealing with, it is not uncommon for an important message to get lost. Follow-up is key if you have interest. A phone call where you actually catch the seller or broker live is generally always a good start for communication.

What kind of financing is available for buyers and owners?

There may be a number of financing options for buyers. We recommend doing research on the specific listing you are looking at. Often times if you can not find traditional business financing such as an SBA loan, perhaps the seller is willing to carry a note.

Do I need a business broker to complete a transaction?

No. You don’t need a broker, however if you are looking for the transaction to actually be handled by a third party because you aren’t sure what needs to be done or don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, then it is highly recommended. A qualified third party such as a business broker, commercial real estate agent, transaction attorney, or other third party is recommended. Business For Sale Exchange is not a brokerage and does not handle any part of the transaction. Our role is strictly to be a marketing platform which connects buyers and sellers.
